What you will be doing
You will join group.one’s WordPress-focused product area, directly managing and leading our RankMath Backend & Websites Engineering team, WP Media’s QA team and the BackWPup engineering team.
Those teams handle development and validation of WordPress plugins & websites in PHP, as well as backend services in Node.js. Previous experience with those languages is preferred.
Your specific tasks will be:
- Establish and improve delivery cadences, planning hygiene, and execution rituals.
- Define, track and improve metrics related to throughput, flow efficiency, and predictability.
- Define and implement testing strategies (unit/integration/e2e), automation coverage, and quality gates.
- Implement observability standards (metrics, logs, traces), SLOs/error budgets, incident response and postmortems.
- Reduce build and feedback times, standardize pipelines, encourage trunk-based development and safe releases.
- Champion paved paths, templates, and tooling that make the right thing the easy thing.
- Coach fellow Engineering Managers and Tech Leads to adopt best practices in delivery, quality, and operability; facilitate knowledge sharing, playbooks, and delivery reviews.
- Partner with EMs to identify and remove impediments, refine workflows, and improve planning accuracy and team health.
- Convert product and platform goals into executable roadmaps, capacity forecasts, and release plans.
- Surface risks early, remove impediments, and ensure transparent communication.
- Maintain a living engineering handbook, playbooks, and guardrails; facilitate documentation reviews and enablement forums.
Requirements

- Proficient knowledge of English: Empathetic and collaborative communication is key: you are comfortable writing, speaking, and listening in English with technical and non-technical teammates
- Solid PHP & Python expertise
- Experience in leading product engineering teams (2-5 years)
- Past experience as developer
- Hands-on mentality if necessary
- CI/CD, testing, and observability expertise
- Feedback orientation: giving and taking
- Experience in mentoring and coaching
- Nice to have:
- SRE, cloud, and security familiarity. Concepts and tools around Kubernetes/containers, cloud platforms, IaC, monitoring/alerting, vulnerability management, and incident response.
- Experience in the WordPress ecosystem and/or PHP/Nod
